The Potrero Hill Neighborhood House ("The Nabe") recently hosted a vibrant, day-long Holiday Cookie Party that brought together neighbors of all ages to celebrate the season. The Nabe’s Julia Morgan Ballroom was transformed into a festive hub of holiday cheer, brimming with creativity and warmth. Managed by the dedicated Nabe staff and enthusiastic high school volunteers, the event featured arts and crafts stations, activities that brought neighbors together, and, of course, cookies galore.
Crafting Holiday Spirit
One popular station had high school students assisting younger participants in creating handmade holiday cards. Equipped with a dazzling array of colorful supplies, children of all ages were encouraged to design cards for family and friends.
Another standout activity was the Edible Art Station, where creativity took a delicious twist. Participants built imaginative sculptures using an assortment of sweets, from marshmallows to gumdrops. These edible creations were as fun to make as they were to eat.
The Ornament Crafting Station was another favorite. Participants selected ornaments and decorated them using a variety of paints, glitter, and other embellishments. The station drew a lively crowd, from energetic children to teens and senior community members, all having fun together while working side by side. The sight of multiple generations sharing stories and laughter was a heartwarming reminder of the power of community and the joy of the holiday season.
Children were encouraged to select a toy from an assortment of donated gifts, wrap it with festive paper and ribbons, and present it to a sibling or friend, fostering a beautiful sense of generosity and connection at the event.
The Sweet Aroma of Cookies Throughout the day, the tantalizing scent of freshly baked cookies wafted through the air as attendees brought in their homemade creations to share and enter into the highly anticipated cookie competition. Cookies continued to pour in, ensuring there were plenty of treats for all to sample while the judges deliberated.
The competition itself was a crowd-pleaser. A local high schooler clinched two awards, showcasing her baking skills, while a newcomer to Potrero Hill earned the coveted Best Cookie title. It was a sweet way to be welcomed into the neighborhood. Welcome to The Hill!
A Thrilling Finale
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the indoor “snowball” fight. Participants tossed soft cloth snowballs, creating a safe and playful atmosphere for everyone to enjoy. Leading the charge was Edward Hatter, the Nabe’s Executive Director, who kicked off the chaos with a bold declaration: “Rules? There are no rules!”
With that, joyful pandemonium erupted as participants of all ages dove into the action. Snowballs flew in every direction, laughter echoed through the room, and the playful energy was contagious. It was the perfect way to cap off a day filled with creativity, generosity, and holiday cheer.
A Day to Remember The Holiday Cookie Party was an overwhelming success, blending creativity, generosity, and community spirit into an unforgettable all-day celebration. The event beautifully embodied the spirit of the season, leaving participants with warm memories and stronger community ties. From the delicious treats to the heartfelt crafts—and the epic “snowball” fight—this day at The Nabe captured the magic of the holidays like no other.
